‘Ideal Man’ for GQ Magazine

Hola, Everyone!! 0

Been a long while since I last posted here. Well, you probably have guessed it by now that working as a postdoc ain’t that brilliant after all. Attending all those meetings do bore me to death and the fact that it’s toward to the end of the Christmas doesn’t help either. Gave a progress presentation about my project and had lots of positive feedback, which is good for a change. Well, at least, that’s it for another 3 months before the next one. going down to London for *yet* another one-day conference next Monday and I started thinking that I may as well live down there, amount of times going there!! 🙂

On a positive note, my best mate Chieh (who did a BSc degree in Fine Art in Manchester back in 1999) is now working as a graphic designer/post-production producer in the NYC (http://www.madhousenyc.com). He has recently uploaded his works onto YouTube at “http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=chiehyen“. Go and have a look, he’s brilliant!!

I Behave At the *Right* Way 0

Nothing too fancy today, as it’s been a long day meeting. Just took a quick online test and it turns out that I do behave appropriately as the age I’m now… 🙂

You Are 27 Years Old
You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what’s to come… love, work, and new experiences.

Time to Learn Spanish 2

It’s been a long time since I last updated you with my *vibrant and exciting* life in Manchester. So what else is there then apart from the time I spent on attending boring meetings, coding programmes and supporting my beloved Man Utd (who, by the way, lot to ARSEnal by a late late goal – don’t know why I bothered really…)? Well, not much to be honest but surprisingly I managed to convince myself and signed up for a Spanish course (beginner level, obviously!!) which starts next Wednesday from 1730 to 2030 for a whole academic year – yap that’s right the whole *THREE* hours (although I do expect a break in between…).

Why Spanish, I heard you shouting. Well, since Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world next to English (some people would argue that it should be Mandarin Chinese – to be honest, I don’t know and don’t really care as I can speak both anyway, LOL!!) and plus the fact that I’d like one day travelling around the south America, knowing Spanish would only do my good!! So here I am, very excited and really looking forward to my first ever Spanish lesson, you never know, if all goes well, I might start writing my blog in Spanish!!

Well that’s it for the time being, ciao… 🙂

Sonia’s Birthday in London 2

Was down in London last Friday for my little sis’s birthday and also did a bit of shopping myself while there (well Sonia was convinced that *was* the main reason why I went all that way down there… :)).

We went to a nice Taiwanese-style Chinese restaurant, called Taiwan Village, near her flat in South Kensington (well saying near, it’s in fact in Fulham and about 25 mins walk away), we had some gorgeous dishes there!!

Spent the whole Saturday pratting about both Angel and Sonia’s PCs and as a reward, I was fed with a lovely home-cooked meal – very nice indeed – I’m getting to think I should be going down there more often now.

Went shopping on Sunday and as oblivious to Sonia and I, it took us a while to realise that there was some special organised event going on nearby – that’s why they blocked the whole street, a small hint maybe… At the end, it turned out to be some sort of Spanish festival!!

There is me trying to look cool… 🙂

Later on that evening, Angel joined Sonia and I at this Jazz bar called Quaglino’s Bar and had a few drinks.

Me and the birthday girl!!

We then finished the day off by going to WooJung, a Korean restaurant, where we grabbed something to eat. And this is where Sonia and Angel tried to tell me this supposedly real and very, very scary ghost story – but being a *proper* scientist and all that, I didn’t think it was worth the time – like hell I would want to know while I’m living on my own?! – try harder next time girls!! 🙂

Finally Moved to the MIB!! 1

Well, after a long and hard day’s work (well mainly chucking out old papers and stuffs that I don’t really need in the new office – which took nearly 3 hours to say the least) all day today, I’ve finally moved into the new office inside MIB eventually. For those who don’t know what MIB is, well to begin with, it stands for Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, and have been created to promote interdisciplinary, challenge-oriented bioscience and biotechnology within the University of Manchester (well, according to the university Website anyway…:|). The move has been promised to take place for nearly 6 months and I’m glad that it finally did take place today as it’s been dragging on a bit too long…

It’s a nice environment and the fact that, at the moment, only 4 of us have moved into our new group office, it feels very spacious and quiet – however, I can see this being changed fairly quickly once everyone all moved in (14 in total!!).

Inside the MIB!!

The move has been pretty much stress-free to me. As I’m a *dry* person (for non-bioscience people out there, this means people predominantly working on the computational side of the things, rather than mixing/analysing chemical stuffs inside the experimental laboratories, which he/she is called a *wet* person), supposedly *all* I have to do is just moving my PCs and books/papers to the new location and I’m done. Well, not quite!! Once my computers are over and I had a difficult time in trying to get my computers (a Linux box and Mac laptop) onto the network and spent the whole afternoon working out the cause behind it, at the end, it comes down to the fact that the new IP addresses given to me wasn’t properly activated (and I’ve to ask the IS people to unblock certain ports so I can run my Web services – well that’s another story…), at last it’s all working okay now – fingers crossed, hope it lasts!!

This is my desk, with my Linux box and Mac laptop!!

The new office looks great and so is inside of the MIB. I had my reservation at first but is kind of growing into liking the building itself now, and it also helps when MIB has its own café!! 🙂

Our office is located on the 2nd floor, although looks a little bare at the moment, this will soon change too once the servers start being moved in the coming weeks.. 😐

Lovely view outside, I really like these huge windows…

More to follow as I start to settle in my new life inside the MIB… 🙂
